There’s still loads to see
Yep, nothing doing for ol’ Chris this week, but it’s nice to have a bit of a break from the hustle (stay tuned for next week). However, I will be making an effort to go out and see some of the great music happening in the city. And as of this month there is an active gig list documenting all of the shows happening in the Vancouver jazz and improvised music scene. This is a fantastic resource that the scene has been missing for a while, so make sure to bookmark it so you don’t miss a thing and thanks to Will and Rory for putting it together.
Get picky, or friendly, or both
Now that all of the info for these events have been aggregated into one place, it might feel a bit overwhelming. The scene is activated and thriving like a healthy yeast starter, bubbling and fizzing up to the top of the chamber before your eyes. “What a tasty kombucha this will be” you may think to yourself. And as much as you may want to drink the whole liter to yourself in one sitting, you simply can’t. It’s just not worth the tummy ache…
Sorry, got a little lost in the sauce there. I think what I’m trying to say is that even though your first thought may be to try to hit every show possible this Saturday (there are NINE this week), you probably won’t. We can’t all be Vincent Lim.
But what you can do is make a solid plan to go to one show on one day. Put it in your calendar, make a reservation if you need to. Call up a friend and invite them. That way instead of burning out in the middle of the day, I’m prepared and commited (emotionally and financially) to being at one show, which is infinitely better than zero, and I know I will have enjoyed it.
So this weekend I’m checking out my boy Todd Stewart for the new late night series at Frankie’s being put on by The Infidels. With a plan, a friend, an open mind, and a belly full of GT Dave’s Guava Goddess, I’ll be virtually unstoppable.
See you out there, folks.
